This month we celebrate Matariki. The name comes from a constellation seen in the eastern sky at this time of year. This is a time to remember the past and look to the future, honouring our whakapapa and the beautiful land in which we live. We welcome stories of stars, the land, honouring, traditions and celebrations.

This month we celebrate Matariki. The name comes from a constellation seen in the eastern sky at this time of year. What are story circles?
The Story Collective holds these once a month as a chance to come together, in a very informal way, to tell and listen to stories. They are for anyone interested in stories - from traditional tales and songs to poetry and newly written pieces. The story circles are a chance for tellers to hone their skills or for writers to try out their creations or work in progress.
How does it work?
The first part of the evening includes a discussion of the theme then focuses on a 'Story skill' – such as working with the voice, gesture, gaze and meaning. This month we are looking at Setting the Scene. How important is place in the telling of a story - how do we create the 'world' of the story? Do all stories need a setting?
Then, anyone who wants to may share something. You are welcome to bring a short piece...no more than 8 minutes long please.
Who is it for?
Story circle welcomes seasoned and beginning storytellers alike, also speakers of poetry and prose. Please come along - all are welcome, bring a friend!
We are fortunate enough to have the Sydenham room in the South Library - this is at the end of the library, furthest from Colombo Street. Please tap on the window if the door is closed. We'll be listening out for you.
There is no entry fee for our circles.
